Yuba County boy arrested after posing as clown, posing threats to schools

Marysville and Yuba County schools were on “soft-lockdown” Friday after a teen boy posing as a clown on social media site Instagram threatened to shoot students.

Following an investigation into who posted on Instagram as “mozzytheclown,” police arrested a juvenile on suspicion of criminal threats, a felony.

Lt. Chris Sachs said after the arrest Friday morning that people should still take precautions.

The original post by “mozzytheclown” read “Okay Let’s Play A Game 10/7/16 Were Gonna Role A Dice And Whatever School It Lands On Where Gonna Shoot Up All The Kids And The Teachers Okay Let’s Get Started!!!!!” The post then listed Lindhurst High School, Yuba Gardens, Ella Elementary, Marysville High School/Community Day, and Rio Del Ora Elementary.

Police said posting such threats constitutes criminal behavior.

Marysville Joint Unified School District echoes the same point. A press release on their website addressed the issue of clown threats in general.

“As you may be aware, there have been numerous social media posts using clowns or depictions of clowns threatening schools across the state and nation. Please know that any social media posts that come to our attention are immediately forwarded to our local law enforcement officials.”

District representatives did not immediately return calls for comment.
