A two-vehicle accident resulting in moderate injuries to one driver caused a large back-up on Highway 49 just after the lunch hour, according to law enforcement officials.

At 12:50 p.m., an unidentified female driver, who was driving a white van northbound on Highway 49 near the Idaho-Maryland Road interchange, stopped suddenly to avoid hitting a dog on the highway, said Dina Hernandez of the California Highway Patrol.

Bobby Leatherman, 32, of Grass Valley, was following the van in a pick-up truck and did not see it stop suddenly and slammed into the rear end of the vehicle, Hernandez.

The female was transported to the hospital with moderate injuries, Hernandez said.

Traffic was congested until about 1:30 p.m., when the highway was cleared.
