Working people are not fools

The Oct. 7, 2010 The Union included an In Brief, “Poll: Working-class whites move toward GOP.” I thought to myself, why?

The Grand Old Party opposes almost everything working class people, including white working class people, believe in and work to accomplish for themselves and their families.

Take funding for education for example. Republicans oppose public school education and are trying to bankrupt our K-12 public schools by instituting voucher programs. Republicans are pushing the cost of a college education so far out of reach for working class families that only the wealthy elites will soon be able to send their kids to college.

Republicans opposed the National Health Care Bill, which increases the availability of college loans, and allows kids to stay on their parents’ health plan until they’re 26 years old.

Republicans oppose the safety net of unemployment insurance. Republicans oppose regulations that keep our air, water, food, consumer products and workplaces safe. It makes no sense that white working class people would move toward the GOP, it’s not in their self-interest.
