Wine Spectator magazine recognizes Friar Tuck’s

Friar Tuck’s Restaurant & Bar of Nevada City has received a 2014 Award of Excellence from Wine Spectator magazine, one of only four such awards in the Northern Sierra region.

The selection is announced in the August issue of Wine Spectator as part of its 33rd annual international awards program. The magazine received submissions from restaurants in all 50 U.S. states and 81 nations and territories around the world.

Friar Tuck’s was recognized for its extensive wine selections and moderate pricing. Wine Spectator designates the award for well-chosen wine lists that feature quality producers, “along with a thematic match to the menu in both price and style. Typically, these lists offer at least 100 selections.”



“In our experience, a restaurant that is serious about its wine program is highly likely to deliver a satisfying dining experience all around,” said Martin Shanken, editor and publisher of Wine Spectator magazine.

Friar Tuck’s founder and longtime owner Greg Cook said the Wine Spectator award attests to the restaurant’s fare and popularity.




“This is a prestigious and well-known award in the restaurant industry and a great honor for us,” he said.

Other regional award-winners include Longboards Bar and Grill in Graeagle, PlumpJack Cafe in Squaw Valley and Carpe Vino in Auburn.

Cook, who opened Friar Tuck’s in 1973, continues to operate the popular downtown restaurant with his wife, Rona. Friar Tuck’s seats 185, offers two wine cellars with more than 300 wine selections.
