Will a recount be requested?

All that stands now between Drew Bedwell and a seat on the Nevada County Board of Supervisors is a recount call by incumbent Bruce Conklin or a voter.

If a recount is requested, it must be submitted to the Elections Office in writing by 5 p.m. Monday.

Whoever requests a recount must pay up front for staffing costs, which would run about $1,000 a day, said assistant Clerk-recorder Judy Bromley.

If a recount is requested, all ballots cast in District 3 will be hand counted and checked for marks that disqualified them during the computer count on election night.

Elections Office staff would look for ballots marked in pen instead of pencil, for example, or ballots where the original vote was erased and other selections were made, thus resulting in over votes where one oval is marked instead of one.

While computerized scanners disqualify such ballots, Elections officials can determine a questionable vote and count it.

Once a recount begins, the person requesting it can stop it at any time and a prorated portion of the amount they paid in advance will be refunded.

If a recount reverses the results, however, the person making the request gets all their money back.

Tuesday’s final results are official unless overturned by a recount.
