Wilcox to speak on gun violence prevention

Recently, President Obama called the failure to enact “common sense gun safety laws” the biggest disappointment of his presidency, pointing out that since Sept. 11, 2001 less than 100 Americans have been killed in terrorist attacks, while tens of thousands have died through gun violence.

At the Aug. 4 First Tuesday Educational Forum sponsored by Nevada County Democrats, Amanda Wilcox, founder and president of the Nevada-Placer Counties Chapter of the Brady Campaign, will speak about grassroots efforts to help reduce gun violence.

Wilcox never thought that she would be personally affected by gun violence until 2001, when her daughter Laura was killed in a shooting rampage perpetrated by a man suffering from severe mental illness.

Following Laura’s death, Wilcox and her husband, Nick, began advocating for gun violence prevention and improved mental health care. Laura’s Law, which provides for court-ordered outpatient treatment for persons with serious mental disorders, was named after their daughter.

The event will take place at the Banner Grange, 12629 McCourtney Road, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Pizza and salad will be provided and beverages will be available for purchase. For more information, call 530-265-3367 or visit http://www.nevadacountydemocrats.com.
