What special interests?

Opposing parties complain about the other’s serving “special interests.” Everyone’s interests are special. Therefore, none are special. So, there is no such thing. There are only the private interest and the public interest.

The private interest is the cause of Republicans. Any benefits obtained for individuals really accrue to private corporations – The Big Money. Their prime directive is the profit motive – to separate other people from their money and amass it in the hands of a few. Those few achieve anonymity through the corporate structure, and are thus unaccountable to the public. Functionally, that structure is monolithic – directives come down from the top, like a dictatorship. The Big Money can manipulate our lives and even our opinions through lobbyists and media.

The public interest is the cause of Democrats. The public interest is what the Preamble to the U.S. Constitution refers to as “the general welfare.” The Democrats’ prime directive is the well-being of the public – fairness, opportunity, health, consumer protections, avoidance of random loss and grief. Historically, the Democrats are responsible for most of the public benefits we take for granted today, from voting rights to Medicare. Functionally, democratic process flows up to authority from the people and is answerable to the public.

Remember these things when you vote Nov. 2.
