Weather: Expect hot temperatures this week, cooling starts around Monday

You’re out of luck if you think the heat is going to disappear by the weekend.

Nevada County is in the middle of a heat wave, as is a swath of Northern California. Temperatures are forecast to top out in the high 80s to low 90s through the weekend — about 10 to 15 degrees higher than normal for this time of year.

Sacramento is forecast to exceed 100 degrees this week, though Grass Valley shouldn’t get that hot.

The area will start seeing a little relief early next week.

“It’s an early season heat wave,” said Karl Swanberg, a forecaster with the National Weather Service.

A strong, high pressure ridge is expected to build over the West Coast over the next few days, though it’ll move east slowly. That high pressure ridge should break up early next week, bringing some lower temperatures.

“No mention of showers at this point,” Swanberg said of western Nevada County. He noted that there’s a chance of showers Sunday and Monday in the foothills’ highest elevations.

Expect today to be sunny with highs around 90. Lows will dip to 61 tonight.

Thursday will be sunny with highs around 88. Temperatures will drop to 62 that night.

More sunny skies are expected Friday, which will see highs around 93. Lows will dip to 68 that night.

Look for Saturday’s highs to also hit 93. That night will cool to around 69.

Sunday will be mostly sunny, with highs reaching only 88. It’ll be partly cloudy that night. Lows will drop to 63.

Relief should begin Monday, when highs climb to 83.
