Walking tour of town’s famed trees

Tonight local arborists will launch a new free self-guided walking tour of Nevada City showcasing 42 dowtown trees.

“We have two tours on this guide – each one takes about an hour,” said guide creator and arborist Ellen Solomon on a recent walk up Broad Street to a large American Linden tree.

A green leaf painted on the sidewalk marks each tree and is linked to numbered sites, a map and detailed descriptions in the guide.

“This area right at the top of Broad Street is special. What I like here is the combination of trees and California architecture,” Solomon said. Redwoods, dogwoods, cedars and maples grace the site.

Tonight Solomon and consulting arborist Randall Frizell will give free tours during the launching of their guide set to begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce, 132 Main St.

Solomon and the newly formed group Friends of Trees Nevada County produced the guide through a grant from California ReLeaf and assistance from Nevada City Chamber of Commerce.

Sponsors for the 18-inch by 24-inch illustrated guide include the Nevada County Land Trust, the Cali- fornia Native Plant Society and the Downtown Business Association of Nevada City.

“What we’re hoping will come of this is a street tree inventory for Nevada City. There’s grant money available,” Solomon said.
