Vote no on Proposition 23

While researching Proposition 23, I cannot help but notice the mudslinging used by both campaigns. The proposition, which appears on the ballot this November, will suspend AB 32, or the Global Warming Solutions Act, until California’s unemployment rate decreases to 5.5 percent or less (which may take years).

AB 32 sets a goal to reduce California’s greenhouse gas emissions significantly by the year 2020. The assembly bill promotes the research and expansion of green technology. Prop 23’s yes campaign believes that AB 32 will kill jobs as manufacturing will be limited while reducing emissions. The no campaign of this proposition believes that the proposition will kill jobs as green technology will be hindered while Californians become less conscious of the importance of the green industry.

Much of the controversy caused by this proposition is brought forth by the fact that it is highly sponsored by two large Texas oil companies, Valero Energy Corporation and Tesoro Corporation.

It is obvious for me to see that, either way, this proposition may kill jobs. Both sides are logical in their commentary about each other. As a minor, I cannot yet vote; however, if I could, I would vote no on this proposition.

While weighing the issues at hand, I believe that Proposition 23 will do more harm than good to California’s economy. Therefore, I urged voters to vote no on Proposition 23.
