Volunteers get a hand

Former educator Fred Hillerman, 92, is retiring as a volunteer Meals-on-Wheels delivery driver after almost 18 years of service. Hillerman and about 200 other community volunteers were honored Tuesday during the annual All-Volunteer Appreciation dessert social at the Quail Ridge Senior Living Center in Grass Valley. If the volunteers were paid, their free services to area seniors and needy would cost an estimated $474,000. For more photos, go to http://www.theunion.com/photos.
