Variety of species entered in fair

The market animal entries for this year’s Nevada County Fair Junior Livestock have increased over 2001 in all species except hogs.

There are 66 market steers, 83 market lambs, 160 market hogs, six market goats and a select number of turkeys, rabbits and broiler chickens entered.

“This is the first year market goats, a species very popular in the areas surrounding Nevada County, will be shown and sold at the Nevada County Fair,” said Mike Blagg, president of the Nevada County Livestock Producers Association.

“It will be interesting to see the buyers’ response to the meat goats being sold at our fair. Goat meat is a delicacy that is lean and generally low in fat.” Blagg said.

Market entries will be judged throughout the fair. Those that meet the appropriate market grades will be sold at the Junior Livestock Auction.

Last year’s auction grossed over $400,000 for the area’s agricultural youth.

For information on becoming a buyer, supporting the auction, or joining NCLPA, contact Blagg at 268-3097 or the fair office at 273-6217.
