Upscale Safeway opens doors Friday

Employees were busy filling up shelves with nonperishables over the weekend in preparation of the new upscale Safeway Lifestyles store grand opening, set for Friday.

The store, located in the Glenbrook Basin building that housed the former Ralphs Grocery Co. store, is opening to meet a March deadline and will remain open during a remodel of the store’s facade.

On Sunday, security guards could be seen talking on cell phones and patrolling on foot in front of the store. Safeway spokesperson Jennifer Webber could not be reached for comment.

The new store will feature a Starbucks’ coffee counter, a sushi bar and a line of gourmet prepared foods.

The new Safeway store will hold a 12-hour sale, will offer 20 percent off on the store’s Organics line and will give away 200 iPod shuffles to kick off its grand opening.

Safeway is one of the largest food and drug retailers in North America. It has more than 1,700 stores across the United States and western Canada, employing more than 220,000 people.

As many as 247 jobs were created by the Glenbrook Basin store, an employee at the Neal Street Safeway said in February.
