A body found buried near the town of Washington in a grave marked “Baby” is that of a dog, Sheriff Keith Royal said today.

“We’re all relieved,” said Royal after a forensic pathologist from Chico made the determination this morning.

Officers received a tip early Monday afternoon about the possibility of a grave near Washington Road, about a mile from Highway 20 in a remote area. A hiker came across the marker, Royal said.

“One of our deputies located what appeared to be a grave marker with the word “Baby” on it and indications of a buried body,” Royal said. “Cadaver dogs were brought in, and all three hit on the site. Our deputies secured and monitored the site overnight.”

Investigators found a blanket about 20 inches below the surface, and they at first conducted the investigation assuming it was a homicide, Royal said.

“It was good practice,” Royal added.
