United Way kicks off $250,000 drive

United Way of Nevada County kicked off its 2004 fund-raising campaign at a Friday breakfast with a simple message – your bucks stay here to support more than 20 community agencies.

In fact, “Your Bucks Stay Here” is the theme of the campaign with a goal of raising at least $250,000.

The marketing campaign, developed by Dale Smith Advertising of Nevada City, focuses on the stories of local heroes – either people who benefit from programs supported by United Way or volunteers for the programs.

Several of the heroes featured in the campaign were introduced to the 150 who turned out at the Fairgrounds kick-off. Those recognized included Grant Jolley and Bill Moberley, who have logged 500,000 miles for Gold Country Telecare driving people to medical appointments, and Evelyne Smallwood, a volunteer for the Truckee-Tahoe Seniors Council who will soon be 93.

Terry McAteer, the county superintendent of schools who unveiled the campaign, pointed out that two-thirds of agencies supported by United Way of Nevada County serve children and families.

“There is a new energy and new vision in United Way,” he said.

Jay Cooper of Network Real Estate got the fund-raising started with an auction that raised about $4,000 for the campaign.
