Two Nevada City ghost tours on tap for October
Now in his 12th year of offering historical ghost walks, actor and author Mark Lyon will be making a major change to his Haunted Nevada City tours.
“As I have collected more and more stories over the years, the Nevada City tours often became longer and longer, sometimes lasting almost two and a half hours,” Lyon said. “As this was far too long for guests with small children and sometimes chilly October nights, I have decided to break up the Nevada City tours into two separate tours; offering a Haunted Broad Street tour on Saturday nights and a Haunted Chinese Quarter to the Stonehouse tour on Sunday nights.
“This will allow me to add some new stories to the Broad Street tours and to include more history concerning the Chinese Quarter, as well as to include a visit the Stonehouse where special guest host, owner Nikko Wu, will both share her personal experiences and invite tour guests into the Stonehouse’s fascinating tunnels on the Sunday tour,” he added.
While his Haunted Grass Valley tour will still be close to two hours in length, Lyon is also reworking this tour in order to devote almost half to exploring the interior of the Holbrooke Hotel.
After spending 24 days filming a docudrama about the ghosts of the Holbrooke and personally experiencing several ghostly encounters in the hotel, Lyon is convinced that the Holbrooke has more distinctly individual ghosts than any other hotel of its size in the world.
“I am extremely grateful to Ian Garfinkle, the owner of the Holbrooke, for allowing me to take the tour through areas of the hotel in which the inexplicable might occur at any moment,” Lyon said.
Lyon will be leading his Haunted Grass Valley tours every Friday evening in October, Haunted Nevada City Broad Street tours every Saturday evening in October and Haunted Nevada City Chinese Quarter to the Stonehouse tours every Sunday evening in October.
Reservations are not taken. Guests merely need to arrive at the tour locations at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children 12 and younger. Children 5 and younger are admitted free.
Private tours at other dates and times may be arranged upon request.
Haunted Grass Valley tours will depart from the Grass Valley Library at 207 Mill St. Haunted Nevada City Broad Street tours will depart from 210 Broad St. (Directly across the street from the National Hotel) and Haunted Nevada City Chinese Quarter to Stonehouse tours will depart from 315 Commercial St. (Commercial at York).
