Two injured in head-on collision near Penn Valley

A woman hurt in a head-on collision west of Penn Valley Tuesday night was airlifted to Sutter Roseville Medical Center.

The crash occurred about 6:40 p.m. on Highway 20 near Smartville Road, said Capt. Mike Deme of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

Initial reports said the woman was trapped in her vehicle, which was on fire. When a firefighter arrived, the victim was outside the vehicle with a head injury, two broken legs and possible abdominal injuries, according to Deme, a dispatcher at the Emergency Command Center near Grass Valley.

The other driver suffered minor injuries and went by ambulance to Rideout Hospital in Marysville.

The drivers’ identities weren’t immediately available.
