Two hurt in head-on crash on Highway 49

Two people were injured Tuesday in a head-on car crash on Highway 49 four miles outside Nevada City, the California Highway Patrol reported.

William James Barnes, a resident of Pollock Pines, was northbound in his 1995 Green Subaru when he said he hit a small rock on the road and lost control of the vehicle.

A CHP officer at the scene said Barnes hit his brakes before he hit a 1968 Ford pickup traveling in the opposite direction.

The accident occurred a little before 1 p.m.

The driver of the Ford pickup truck, Jennifer Goldberg, 43, of Nevada City, and her passenger, Alan Hendrickson, 44, address unknown, were transported by ambulance to Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital, the CHP reported.

Both were treated and released, a SNMH supervisor nurse said.

Barnes, 41, said the road was very, very slick. “It happened in slow motion and so fast at the same time,” he said. His dog, a pug, was apparently unhurt.

The crash remains under investigation, CHP Officer Greg Thys said.

Dave Russo, an off-duty volunteer firefighter with the 49er Fire Protection District, helped direct traffic during the call.
