Two DUI wrecks mar county roads

Warm weather marks an increase in the combination of drinking and driving, resulting in two alcohol-related wrecks in western Nevada County Tuesday evening, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The two solo wrecks resulted in two injured drivers being under investigation for driving under the influence of alcohol, CHP Officer Jeff Pingree said today.

At 10:05 p.m., Grass Valley resident Cody J. Pondexter, 23, hit the center divider of the northbound Golden Center Freeway just north of Idaho-Maryland Road. The 1977 Datsun 280Z he was driving came to rest across the lanes, and law enforcement agents closed the northbound highway for more than an hour.

Pondexter was transported to Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital with chest abrasions, Pingree said.

At 10:50 p.m., Colfax resident Earl L. Barrett, 40, ran his 2005 Harley-Davidson Roadstar onto the shoulder of Highway 174 by Mosswood Lane. He was taken to the hospital with cuts to the face and arms, and complaining of pain to the back, hips and neck, Pingree said.
