Two dogs found shot – Pit bulls had collars and leashes; suspects and owners unknown

Two leashed pit bulls were found shot to death south of Grass Valley Thursday night.

The dogs, which were also wearing collars, likely were killed somewhere else and then dumped on Wolf Road, near Lime Kiln Road, according to the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office.

At 8:13 p.m., a resident found the dogs and called the sheriff’s department.

“One dog was shot three times,” Sheriff’s Lt. Ron Smith said. “It appears they were shot elsewhere and dumped. We don’t know who the suspects are and who the owners are.”

Smith said he believes the dog’s owners were the ones responsible, although that has not been verified yet. The crimes will most likely be prosecuted as felonies if the person or people responsible are found, he said.

“If anyone is missing two dogs, get ahold of our office,” he said. Those with information on the shootings should call the sheriff’s office at 265-1471.

It was not clear Friday afternoon what type of weapon was used in the shootings, or where the dogs were shot.

“It didn’t appear there was a great deal of time between when they were shot and when they were discovered,” Smith said. “It’s pretty early still.

“Any cruelty to any animal is inhuman. We will deal with it.”
