Tunes from around the globe

Local women’s choir Podruzhki sings tunes from Istria and Bulgaria – both in the Balkan Peninsula – along with Ladino (Spanish-Jewish) songs today. Scales, harmonies and rhythms are challenging, unusual and non-Western. The songs are emotional and sensual and may haunt your memory afterward. Podruzhki shares the bill with Village Folk Orkestra, and the event is both a concert and dance featuring traditional music mostly from Eastern Europe. Doors open 7:30 p.m. at the Nevada City United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, 433 Broad Street, at street level. Music starts around 8 and there will be room for both listeners and dancers. A voluntary $5-and-up donation is requested. For more information, call 272-2149.
