At the Mendocino Brewing Co. in Ukiah, packaging manager John Scahill waited for the shipment that never arrived.

“You wouldn’t happen to know when we’re getting our malt? We’d like to make some beer,” he said Tuesday.

The tardy shipment was 41,000 pounds of malted wheat that spilled on the Golden Center Freeway’s Coyote Street exit in Nevada City after the delivery truck tipped over.

Fortunately, the wheat was in plastic bags, and all but two or three of the 50- or 60-pound bags were spared, according to Caltrans spokesman Mark Dinger.

“It smells pretty bad,” California Highway Patrol spokesman Officer Troy Marks said of the pungent beer ingredient.

The mishap occurred at 7:40 a.m., when Stoyan Stoyanov, 45, of Vernon Hills, Ill., turned onto the Coyote Street exit thinking it was the connector to westbound Highway 20, which is actually west of Grass Valley, Marks said.

Stoyanov entered the ramp at 40 mph, and his rig and trailer tipped onto their left side, according to Marks.

The accident blocked the exit, and the cleanup lasted until just after 1 p.m., Dinger said.

Stoyanov, driving for Majestic Logistics of Elk Grove Village, Ill., was uninjured.

He was cited with violations unconnected to the crash, Marks said, including driving with worn tires and excessive axle grease, and keeping improper driving log records.
