Toy gun incident lands pair behind bars

A toy handgun unwittingly aimed at an undercover narcotics agent landed two Nevada County teens in jail Tuesday, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Adam M. Marinelli, 18, of Nevada City and Malcom C. Fadden, 18, of Grass Valley were each arrested on suspicion of exhibiting a firearm and possession of stolen property.

The teens were driving on North Bloomfield-Graniteville Road, northeast of Nevada City, about 9:45 a.m. when Marinelli pointed the toy at a narcotics officer dressed in street clothes, Lt. David Baxley said.

The agent pulled over the two near Cooper Road using lights and a siren. He radioed for backup and a swarm of narcotics agents, Nevada City police officers and sheriff’s deputies converged on the car, Baxley said.

Two toy guns were found in the teens’ vehicle, along with a road sign stolen from Nevada Union High School on March 21, and a knife with brass knuckles belonging to Fadden, Baxley said.

Although the guns were fake, the two still face possible felonies because the narcotics officer thought he was facing a real weapon, Capt. Mike Hanson said.

Marinelli was also arrested for possession of an illegal weapon, and Fadden, who had a 0.04 blood-alcohol percentage, was cited with minor in possession of alcohol, their booking sheets say. They were booked into Wayne Brown Correctional Facility on $10,000 bail each.
