California’s Proposition 19 to legalize and tax marijuana will be discussed at a Sept. 22 town hall meeting in Grass Valley.

The Coalition for a Drug Free Nevada County is sponsoring the panel discussion to offer the drug rehabilitation group’s perspectives on the potential effects of Prop. 19 on the community.

Panelists are expected to include District Attorney Cliff Newell, Grass Valley Police Capt. Rex Marks, Nevada County Sheriff’s Sgt. Bill Smethers, insurance industry representative Chip Arenchild, Aimee Hendle of Californians for a Drug Free Youth, Michelle Gregory of the state Department of Justice, and representatives from western Nevada County schools, real estate, health agencies and government.

The meeting is set for 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, at the Grass Valley Veterans Memorial Building, 255 S. Auburn St. Light refreshments will be served at 5 p.m. The meeting is free and open to the public.

Voters will decide the issue on the November ballot.
