Tons of trash – Many help clean South Yuba River

More than 500 volunteers pulled nine tons of trash out of the Yuba River and its tributaries Saturday during The South Yuba River Citizens League seventh annual Yuba River Clean-Up.

Volunteers from Nevada County, Reno, Sacramento, Davis, and the Bay Area covered 25 separate areas throughout the Yuba Watershed. Volunteers pulled out an estimated 15,600 pounds of trash and 2,497 pounds of recyclables. Some of the more interesting items included a black evening gown, BBQ grill, home entertainment center, confidential medical records, and an antique metal tiller.

SYRCL expanded the effort this year to include the Yuba River, Deer Creek, Wolf Creek, and Bear River watersheds.

“Once again, our community has come together to help take care of the river we all care for and love,” said Kayle Martin, SYRCL’s event coordinator.

Volunteers included members of Friends of Deer Creek, Wolf Creek Community Alliance, the Sierra Club, Audubon Club, Union Hill School, Yuba River Charter School, South Yuba River State Park at Bridgeport docents, members of Nevada Union’s Stream Club and Friends International, Bear River High Schools Key Club, Nevada County Resource Conservation District, Sequoia Challenge, Sierra Center for Positive Living, local chapters of Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, and a large group of local and regional fly fishing enthusiasts.
