‘Today’ looks at Nevada County

The Nevada County Meltdown Challenge, a communitywide weight-loss initiative, will soon go national and maybe even international.

Meltdown leader Carole Carson said she and Dixie Redfearn, readership editor for The Union, will be two participants interviewed live on NBC’s “Today” show Tuesday morning.

The interview from Carson’s home is scheduled for 5 a.m. Tuesday, and it will be broadcast live on the East Coast at 8 a.m. EST. The “Today” show will be broadcast by Sacramento’s KCRA at 7 a.m. local time and run until 9 a.m.

Carson expects Katie Couric to interview her, because it was a Couric representative who called to schedule the live remote broadcast. “Is this a kick?” Carson said Wednesday.

The Meltdown is a communitywide, weight-loss initiative proposed by Carson late last year. More than 600 Nevada County residents have formed teams with the eight-week goal of shedding as many pounds as possible.

A health columnist for The Union, Carson said NBC plans to follow up with another story.

NBC called on the heels of a Los Angeles Times story on the Meltdown that appeared Wednesday. Carson said she was also contacted by a British news service that will be at the Nevada County Fairgrounds at 7 p.m. next Tuesday for a story that could be picked up internationally.
