Toastmasters to host speech contests

Area 64 Toastmasters will host its annual table topics and international speech contests on Friday at the Nevada County Superintendent of Schools office.

The event will kick off with a potluck at 6 p.m. and the contests will begin at 6:30 p.m. The contest will have representatives from each of the clubs in Area 64 competing in both contests.

The contest is being chaired by Mary Thompson, a member of Mother Lode Toastmasters.

Toastmasters International is a world leader in communication and leadership development. Their membership is 313,000-strong. Members improve their speaking and leadership skills by attending one of the 14,650 clubs in 126 countries that make up a global network of meeting locations. Area 64 is made up of four clubs in the Nevada City/Grass Valley/Penn Valley area.

During the table topics contest, each contestant will receive a prompt to which they will have to respond with an extemporaneous speech lasting a minimum of one minute and a maximum of two minutes and 30 seconds.

The Toastmasters are not provided the prompt ahead of time and remain out of the contest area until their turn to speak. They enter the room, are called by their name, provided the topic and they must begin responding to the topic immediately.

The winner of the table topics contest will move forward to the Division F Contest in Roseville on April 25. The winner of that contest will move on to compete at the District 39 Contest on May 16 in Sacramento.

The International Speech contest offers Toastmasters the opportunity to progress through a series of competitions to an international stage where the World Champion of Public Speaking is crowned.

The contestants follow the same progressive path. However, the winner of the District 39 International Speech Contest will move on to compete in the semi-finals at the Toastmasters International Convention in Las Vegas in August. The winners of each of the semi-final rounds move on to compete for the World Champion title.

The public is invited to attend the contest to learn more about Toastmasters and to watch the contestants compete for the titles. For more information contact Jerri Glover at or call 530-913-7254.
