The wonders of the library

I waited for five minutes outside the library today (Tuesday, Feb. 9) until it opened. The parking lot was full. The bus had just dropped off more people. Preschool age children were skipping about. Seniors and the rest of us were waiting – some needing a warm place more than others.

I came here with small children years ago. It was always a happy trip, knowing there’d be no battles about what I may or may not buy for them. We got to discover silly or beautiful books, learn about things or wonder our way into stories. Now those kids have grown into bright, creative, community-oriented people.

As I checked out my books and commented to the librarian on this little microcosm, she responded with a warm smile. She sees it every day. “The good, the bad, and the ugly” is what she calls it; and simply “community.” She commented on the popular book I was checking out – there’s a movie at the library I can also get that’s related to this book. Ah, learn something new everyday!

I’m hard-pressed to think of another place like this.
