The county budget process goes online
Though it may not make for the most compelling Web-surfing, the Nevada County budget process has gone online for the public’s review and input.
For the first time, citizens can get involved in the budget process and keep track of how the county plans to spend their tax dollars, said Supervisor Peter Van Zant, who also sits on the county’s budget subcommittee.
Van Zant said the budget Web site addresses three principles of county government: transparency, delivery of services and government spending accountability to the public.
“This is the most transparent budget process we’ve ever had, and public input will help make sure the money goes to the delivery of good services,” Van Zant said.
The site includes an icon citizens can click to e-mail comments and suggestions to the budget team throughout the budget process.
“This process alerts people early, so if they want to give the budget team input before the proposed budget goes to the board in June, they can do so through the Web site,” Van Zant said.
The Web site began as a way to reduce the amount of paperwork shuffled between department heads and improve the process, said Stephanie Snyder, the county’s communications coordinator.
“We’re improving the efficiency of the budget process while making the whole process more visible to the public,” she said.
The site also includes the county’s goals and objectives, a budget calendar, supplemental budget request information and subcommittee meeting schedules.
People can click the meeting schedule to find the day the department they’re interested in is going to the budget subcommittee.
For its effort to make county government accessible via Internet-based applications, Nevada County was given a Silver Seal eGovernance Award of Distinction by the National Academy of Public Administration and the National Association of Counties.
County online services available to the public include advanced library services, look-up and purchase of clerk-recorder documents, election results, and previews of county surplus equipment and tax-delinquent real estate sales.
