THE ARTISTS: Barbara Lynn Gilberg
What is your career and your current job title? Lip Service Singing Telegrams performer and owner.
Describe in a sentence or two your art. I deliver personalized singing telegrams for about the same price as sending flowers.
How long have you been working in this discipline? I have been singing professionally for 12 years. I started Lip Service this month.
Why do you do it? My husband and I recently adopted two toddlers and I left my full-time job of seven years to stay home with them. I love to sing and Lip Service seemed like a great way to do what I love and contribute to our family income. My mom would say I do it because I didn’t get enough attention as a child.
What do you hope to accomplish? I would like Lip Service to be well-known in Nevada County for its superior and FUN service. Have a good time making people laugh.
Do you create your art with an exact message you want the viewer to receive and if yes, what is that message? The message is the song. I am just the messenger; I just happen to be dressed in a funny costume and I might be wearing tights or a weird hat.
Where do you want to be with your art, in terms of part-time versus full-time status, positions and where your work is seen? I would like Lip Service to be a full-time venture and cover all of Nevada County.
What kind of special training did you take? I had a couple of months of singing lessons when I first began acting in community theater. I had a few lessons with Maeve Fry that helped refine my techniques.
How did you learn the art techniques or processes? Performing in over 20 musicals. Singing in rock ‘n’ roll bands. Doing stand-up comedy at the Holbrooke. Dancing in front of the TV when I was little so my parents would watch me.
What’s your favorite part of your endeavors? The silliness of it all. Dressing up in a funny costume and surprising someone with a song. It is all really silly!
What’s your least favorite part of your endeavors? When my car breaks down on 49 and I am in a frog suit!
How many hours a day or, if more appropriate, a week do you spend on your work?
I anticipate spending at least 20 hours a week on Lip Service.
Do you consider it hard work and could anyone do it? It’s FUN work! Yes, I would say it is hard work but really fun! Yes, I think if someone really wants to sing, they can learn like I did. It just takes a very serious commitment, patience and time. And you have to be willing to wear a frog suit!
Any other comments you’d like to include? I just know that Lip Service will be a big hit because Nevada County (residents) support each other! I hope I will sing for all of you on one occasion or another. Visit my Web site, gvlipservice.com, and if you see a frog stranded on Highway 49, please help. I can also be reached on my cell phone at 559-2027.
