Teen’s dog wins award at Westminster show

A 14-year-old Bear River High School freshman and her Siberian husky won an award comparable to best of breed at the Westminster Kennel Club’s 127th annual dog show in New York City.

The competition, which concluded Tuesday at Madison Square Garden, yielded a top award for Stephanie House and her dog, Julie, who performs under the name Ch. KooBear Kaila Jubilee. The “best of opposite sex” award was given to the dog, a female, and is comparable to a best of breed award.

“It’s very cool for a 14-year-old girl to beat the competition,” said Stephanie’s mother, Barbara. “She’s one of the youngest to handle a dog.”

Barbara House said her daughter is also ranked as the No. 6 handler in the United States.

Stephanie’s twin sister, Lauren, has also performed at the Westminster Kennel Club dog show with a Siberian husky, advancing to the Milan World Dog Show in Italy two years ago.

Jake, a 3-year-old Havanese owned by Gene and Jody Wood of Grass Valley, also participated in the prestigious dog show.
