Taking shape

Construction of the Holiday Inn Express and conference center in Grass Valley is taking shape as workers use a crane to lift steel beams into place Monday.

Work at the 2.2-acre site next to the Golden Center Freeway had been stalled by recent winter storms, but workers braved Monday’s cold wet weather to make some progress on the $10.5-million project.

In addition to 80 hotel rooms, the complex will include three outdoor plazas – a 5,000-square-foot site for outdoor functions and events, an outdoor coffee plaza and a historical plaza honoring the city’s Chinese heritage. The hotel will be called Gold Miners Inn when it opens for business in September.
