Take a hike

The Sutter Buttes Regional Land Trust has announced their first three hikes of the spring season. For information on the hikes and directions on how to sign up, visit MiddleMountain.org.

North Butte. One of the most challenging treks, this route is a steep, 1,000-foot push straight up North Butte; off-trail with no easy switchbacks. Only register for this hike if you are in very good physical shape and don’t suffer from vertigo. Bring food and water.

Limit is 15 (six spaces remaining). Date: Feb. 21 or March 7. Cost: $35

West Ridge: Shaeffer Ranch. The Shaeffer Family will host hikers on their ranch on the north side of the buttes. Hikers will explore this ranch that has been in the same family since the 1860s. This hike will have views of North Butte, Peace Valley and the old Titan Missile site, weather permitting. Bring food and water. Date: Saturday, Feb. 27. Cost: $35

Wildflower Study: Shaeffer Ranch. Early spring rains are causing the verdant Buttes hillsides to turn into a colorful, shimmering wildflower garden. Bring food and water. Last year, 27 types of flowers were found on this ranch. Date: Saturday, March 6. Cost: $35
