T-shirts honor broken bones

TRUCKEE – Now the more than 1,000 people each year who sign their name to Tahoe Forest Hospital’s Wrist Fracture Hall of Fame can take a souvenir home to remember their accomplishments.

The Tahoe Forest Hospital Auxiliary created a T-shirt to recognize all of the snowboarding and skiing injuries the emergency room treats each winter. On the front, the shirts read: “It’s not how fast … It’s not how far … It’s not how high …”; and on the back, the shirts read: “It’s all in the landing … Busted.”

“Because we have so many broken bones, we thought we should make a shirt,” said Sandy Gautschi, president of the hospital auxiliary and manager of the organization’s shop, The Gift Tree.

The idea for the shirts came about when radiology technician Jennifer Parodi suggested creating a shirt for the emergency room.

“We have so many people who come through who break appendages, I thought, ‘I would want a T-shirt to remember it by,'” Parodi said.

“People kind of take pride in their injuries, especially when it’s through an outdoor activity.”

Gautschi enlisted her son Rich, a Morgan Hill resident, to design the shirt. Gautschi’s grandchildren, Ryan and Ronni, created the logo and computer design, respectively.

The shirts are available at The Gift Tree for $15, and all proceeds – roughly $7.50 per shirt – will go to the auxiliary, which raises money for Tahoe Forest Hospital.
