SYRCL film fest hits the road

The Wild & Scenic Environmental Film Festival is becoming a road show.

The annual event, which raises environmental awareness and funds for the South Yuba River Citizens League, is now available on a national basis, according to festival coordinator Kathy Dotson.

This year’s fourth annual festival in Nevada City brought about 3,000 people to town and was co-sponsored by Patagonia, a firm dedicated to the environment and the sale of items for climbing, skiing and running. Patagonia has now decided to help finance the festival as a road show.

“We sell them an evening of films,” Dotson said, for $725 to $950, depending on what the buyer wants. “We give them two options. I can present it and be the MC or they can buy our name and present an evening of films as a fundraiser.”

Patagonia spokeswoman Susie Sutphin said from Southern California that the firm will pay “a minimum of $500,” of a group’s cost to put the festival on, recognizing that not every environmental group can afford the full price.

Teaming with SYRCL, “Is a natural match and represents Patagonia’s core values to help find solutions to environmental crisis and to get people involved with the environment,” Sutphin said. The shows are usually done through dealers of Patagonia products who know about local environmental groups and their need for funds, Sutphin said.

When the festival is shown, SRCYL gets promoted by Patagonia and has its message of protecting the South Yuba spread.

“We get to use the marketing machine of Pantagonia and their markets throughout the United States,” said Dotson, who has already taken the festival out on a trial basis.

“I’ve been as far as New York,” Dotson said. “I’m going to Santa Barbara next week and New Hampshire in May.”
