At Yuba River Charter School, the eighth-grade class play is a highlight of the year for the student-actors. Proceeds from ticket sales fund their field trip backpacking in Cache Creek Wilderness. This year, the students are performing “Swing Kids.”

“Swing Kids” is a thought-provoking play set in Germany in 1939 on the brink of World War II.

During this era, high school students in the large German cities, such as Hamburg and Berlin, immersed themselves in swing and jazz music as part of a counter-culture movement and to express their dismay about the pressure to join the Hitler Youth associations. Performance highlights include energetic swing dancing, both live and recorded music and live singing.

The play is directed by Ariana Rampy, and Thea Beling is the choreographer. Patricia Montijo is the playwright who adapted the script for the class.

“Swing Kids” will be performed at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. Thursday; 12:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. Friday; and at noon May 11. The performance location is the auditorium at the school (formerly known as Nevada City Elementary), located at 505 Main St. in downtown Nevada City.

Tickets are $5 for students and senior citizens and $8 for adults. Tickets are available at the Yuba River Charter School Office, Harmony Books, and Briar Patch.
