Swarthout to run for re-election in GV

Grass Valley Vice Mayor Lisa Swarthout will run for re-election to a second term on the city council, the downtown businesswoman said today.

Also today, Placer Title Co. employee Yolanda Cookson, 30, turned in the signatures of 30 supporters. City Clerk Kristi Bashor turned the signatures over to the Nevada County Elections Office for validations; results should be back in a few days, Bashor said.

Others who have said they will run are:

– Incumbent Jan Arbuckle, 57, a retired Sacramento County sheriff’s deputy who still volunteers there. Council members appointed her to the post in early 2007 to finish out the term of Councilman Dean Williams, who resigned unexpectedly in December 2006.

– Rachel Rue, 65, a movie theater employee.

Candidates have until Aug. 8 to take out papers to run for one of three open spots on the council.

Mayor Mark Johnson has said he will not run for re-election after serving two terms.
