Summer fun on Lake Vera with Camp Augusta and Camp Del Oro (VIDEO)

You don’t have to travel to the East Coast to take part in the sights and sounds of that classic summer camp experience. Nevada City’s Lake Vera offers that and more.

After sitting dry for the past few years due to the drought, Lake Vera is full of water and all of the fun to keep the two major camps on the lake, Camp Augusta and the Salvation Army’s Camp Del Oro, with a long wait list to get in.

But the draw of zip-lining, water sliding, horse riding, arrow shooting, craft making, whip cracking, watermelon eating and hundreds of other activites keeps kids and their families coming back for more year after year.

“We try to let the kids do things here that they can’t do at home,” Camp Augusta program director Ronnie Ferrans said.

While both Camp Augusta and Camp Del Oro are nonprofits and cater to youth, Camp Del Oro aims to give those less priveledged campers the opportunity to see what it’s like to have the traditional summer camp experience.

The water slide nicknamed ‘Wet Willy’ is one of the biggest attractions at Camp Del Oro, with children lining up to get a chance to ride the slide into Lake Vera.
