Sherry DeVogelaere is a hair stylist at Blondie’s Salon in Grass Valley.

“In my profession, I would have to say that on most days I don’t feel the classic definition of what I do is ‘working.’ That word has a negative feel attached to it,” she says.

“My ‘work’ is usually very positive and fulfilling, so work for me means feeling bone-tired at the of the day, but very satisfied that I might have made someone’s day that much better.

“I guess I do what I do for a number of reasons: There is something about the challenge and creativity this field brings, working with a wide variety of people. Listening to and helping them achieve their own personal style is very satisfying.

“When a person leaves happier than when they arrived, I consider the day a success.”
