Study to start for raising mitigation fees

The Nevada County Transportation Commission is taking important steps to raise mitigation fees the county charges for new construction. These fees help pay for regional transportation projects.

At a meeting starting at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday in Grass Valley council chambers, the commissioners will authorize consultants to begin a study about which the increase will be based. They also will discuss an interim fee that may be charged while the study is under way.

The commission can recommend an interim fee, but the fee can be adopted only by the two cities and the county, said Dan Landon, executive director of the Transportation Commission.

The study that will start this month is expected to end around June 2007, Landon said. The project is expected to cost $133,098.

“The premise of the mitigation fee program is new development will pay for its impact on the transportation system,” Dan said. “Having that premise in mind, we update the fee on a regular basis to ensure that the identified project costs are consistent with the rate of inflation and also the increase in the cost of materials.”
