Student flight training scholarships available in Nevada County

Submitted by JT Kohler

Thanks to a donation from Sylvia Pichitino, family, friends and many members of the flying community, this year the Golden Empire Flying Association has announced the “John M. Pichitino Memorial Scholarship” in honor of John Pichitino. The scholarship will provide up to $9,000 in funds for student flight training. Due by May 1, a scholarship will be awarded to an area applicant or multiple applicants living within 25 nautical miles of the Nevada County Airport.

Applicants must be at least 16 years of age with a passion for aviation and must have a “good” to “outstanding” record of achievement in school or work. They must also be willing to commit to an “active and enthusiastic pursuit of flight training.”

John Pichitino, whom many knew as “Pich,” spent the last 30 years of his life living in Nevada City and flew from Nevada County Airport. He began flying at the age of 15 and over the years shared his passion for the skies by taking hundreds of children and adults on flights. For more information on Pichitino, visit
