State’s top poet to appear in county

Al Young, poet laureate of California, will soon be in town. The Nevada County Poetry Series has invited Young to attend their annual fundraiser at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 27 at the Center for the Arts in Grass Valley. Young will read his poems and excerpts from other works.

“This event is for the community as a whole,” said Bill Gainer, member of the board of directors of the Nevada County Poetry Series. “Being that Al Young is the California Poet laureate, we wanted to reach out to the local schools, high schools, and Sierra College, and make sure they have the opportunity to come and share the evening with him, too.

“As a part of that involvement with the community, some of the Inkwell student writers from the Nevada Union High School are coming to open the show. We’re thrilled with their involvement as well.”

Gainer is expecting between 300 to 400 people at the event.

“It’s wonderful to have him (Young) come to the community of Nevada County and share his talents with us,” he said. “We share all genres of poetry with the community, and Al Young has a strong background in the jazz musical field as well as being a college instructor for numerous years and he’s concerned for social issues which are all reflected in his poetry.”

Tickets for the evening can be purchased at Odyssey Books, The Book Seller, and Cherry Records in advance for $8 general, seniors, and students, and $2 for those under the age of 18, or at the door for $10 and $3, refreshments included. The show will be in the main theater at the Center for the Arts. For more information, call 432-8196 or 274-8384.
