St. Patrick’s to continue Spanish Masses

Spanish-language masses will continue at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Grass Valley, despite the departure of the priest who had celebrated the weekly services, the Rev. Tim Nondorf.

Nondorf’s last Mass was Friday, church secretary Maria Rubalcava said.

Father Sylvester Kwiatkowski has taken charge of the Spanish services, celebrated at noon on the last Sunday of every month, and Rubalcava is assisting with the Spanish-language portion, she said Saturday.

A new priest to the parish, Father Cecilio Tupasi, is practicing Spanish to help out as well, Rubalcava added.

“We are going to continue trying to offer services in Spanish, and the Hispanic Apostolate in Sacramento (with the Sacramento Diocese) is supporting us,” Rubalcava said.

Area Latinos, many of them Mexican immigrants, offered Nondorf a send-off after his final bi-lingual Mass on Jan. 27.

Outreach ministries of the Baptist Church have estimated more than 2,000 Mexicans live in western Nevada County. Many of them work in the area’s construction, landscaping, agriculture, hospitality and manufacturing industries.
