Spiral Internet’s gigabit fiber optic internet grant slated for Dec. 3 California Public Utilities Commission meeting

Spiral Internet, as Bright Fiber Network, Inc., submitted a California Advanced Services Fund grant application on Feb. 1, 2013 to build a gigabit fiber optic Internet network located in south Nevada County along Highway 174 and Dog Bar Road.

Late last week, the California Public Utilities Commission staff submitted a resolution to the commission recommending that the $16.8 million funding for the project be approved, and placed on its Dec. 3 agenda for a vote.

The phase one project will provide gigabit (1,000 megabits per second) symmetrical Internet access speeds over a new 100 percent fiber optic network for 1,963 households. It will also serve businesses, schools, and public safety facilities within its 21 square mile imprint. The active ethernet network will be built all underground to each premise; providing sustainability and scalability for 50 to 100 years into the future. It will be the first such network in rural northern California, and one of the few within California.

Spiral Internet is seeking support from Nevada County residents and businesses in submitting letters of support to the commissioners.
