Speed ‘humps’ for Grass Valley street urged

Grass Valley’s first speed humps – lower and smoother than speed bumps – may be installed this year.

That’s if the Grass Valley City Council approves a recommendation to install two temporary speed humps along French Avenue, where residents have repeatedly complained that cars travel too fast on the narrow street.

The city traffic review committee unanimously recommended the plan Wednesday.



The two proposed speed humps, made of recycled tire, will be temporary, city staff said Wednesday. If residents like them, permanent ones will be built out of asphalt, and the two temporary ones – worth an estimated $6,280 – could be used at another street location in the city, staff said.

The speed humps would be 14 feet wide and 3 inches above ground and designed so cars could smoothly travel over them at 20 miles per hour or slower, said Tim Crough, deputy director of public works.




If the City Council approves the plan, the speed humps could be installed in March.

Residents have repeatedly voiced support for the traffic calming measure.

Sharon Peterson, who lives at the corner of Brighton Street and French Avenue, asked if a third could be installed on French, closer to Brighton Street. City engineer Tim Crough said that would not be advisable because the speed humps need to be 300 to 400 feet apart. The distance between the second speed hump and Brighton Street is 275 feet.

Putting another speed hump closer to Mill Street would not wise either, he said, because the road incline there is too steep.

Other residents present at the meeting said they wished French Avenue were a one-way street because it is so narrow.

Members of the city’s traffic safety review committee include Vice Mayor DeVere Mautino, Dan Landon, executive director of the Nevada County Transportation Commission, City Administrator Gene Haroldsen, Police Chief John Foster and Rudi Golnik, director of public works.
