Sony commercials boost area
The bride and groom in a commercial shoot in Nevada City Monday shouldn’t be the only ones grinning from ear to ear after production finishes at the end of the week.
Restaurants, hotels, specifically Grass Valley’s Holiday Inn Express, and local shops likely will benefit from the nearly 75-member production crew staying locally while filming seven commercials highlighting Sony products.
“They’ll eat a lot of food, buy a lot of trinkets and they’re going to drink a lot of wine,” said Wilson Wu, location manager for the commercial.
On Monday, the production crew shot at Trinity Church in Nevada City, but they came into town Sunday night, pushing the Holiday Inn Express to its capacity.
“Normally, we would be 50 to 60 percent full,” said Melanie Tassone, the hotel’s sales director. A family reunion coupled with the commercial production crew filled up the hotel’s 80 rooms, she said.
When Sony representatives arrived Sunday, they couldn’t wait and stopped off for a bite to eat at Pete’s Pub Style Pizza, said Steve Sommers, Sony’s marketing director.
“We’ve already received a bunch of (restaurant) recommendations from locals,” Sommers said.
Pete’s is mere steps from where one of the Sony commercials is scheduled to shoot today – the Del Oro Theatre.
“It’ll be fun for the locals to see the theater in a national ad,” said Barbara Getz, who owns the Del Oro with her husband Mike.
Production crews plan to film the front of the theater including the marquee, box office and poster boards during a commercial shoot today, Getz said.
Last weekend, crew members picked up 10 azalea plants from Prospector’s Nursery in Nevada City for Monday’s wedding scene at Trinity Church.
“They were trying to shop locally, which is very nice,” said Pam White, one of the store’s owners. It’s rare for the store to get such a large purchase of azaleas, she said.
Monday’s wedding scene was designed to illustrate Sony’s Cyber-Shot camera, said Sommers. The commercial featured nearly 20 actors and actresses crowding in front of the church.
The seven commercials also will shoot at private residences in and around Nevada City later this week.
Sony officials anticipate airing the commercials beginning April 21 on prime time TV, cable and in movie theaters.
“In the long term, it’s just good exposure for the community,” said Mark Miller, city manager of Nevada City.
While Getz is prepared for fun today, she isn’t getting overconfident.
“We might end up on the cutting room floor,” Getz said.
