Richard Somerville has been hired as editor of The Union. He replaces John Seelmeyer, who left the newspaper last month after leading the newsroom for nearly 12 years.

Somerville, who hopes to “officially” begin work Sept. 9, has been with the Media Management Center at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., for the past three years. Prior to that, he taught at the University of Missouri School of Journalism in Columbia.

He’s also held editor positions in Iowa, Hawaii and South Dakota.

“Everyone tells me that The Union serves a growing, diverse and activist community whose citizens honor their history while looking to the future,” said Somerville. “I’m looking forward to learning all about western Nevada County and hearing from readers about how their newspaper can better serve them.”

The Union’s city editor, Dave Moller, will continue to serve as interim editor until Somerville arrives.

“There’s no question that Richard will bring the tools needed to take this newspaper to a new level,” said The Union publisher Jeff Ackerman. “John Seelmeyer left some big shoes to fill, and we needed someone who had the experience and skills to follow in John’s footsteps.”

Seelmeyer left for Reno to edit a startup business journal serving northern Nevada.
