Solo crash kills man near Smartsville

A Wheatland man reportedly heading home from his job at a Nevada City restaurant was killed in a solo-vehicle accident Saturday night.

Jesse Billingsley, 37, was driving southbound on Chuck Yeager Road north of Daugherty Road, in Smartsville, at about 11:40 p.m. when he swerved right and ran off the road for unknown reasons, according to a report by the California Highway Patrol.

The left fender of Billingsley’s car struck a tree and a barbed wire fence line, causing major damage.

According to the CHP report, Billingsley was not wearing his seatbelt and sustained major injuries.

Firefighters and paramedic personnel were able to extricate him from the vehicle, but Billingsley died before he could be flown to a regional hospital.

The accident remains under investigation.
