Snowbound family of 3 is rescued

A Nevada City family of three was rescued from the Castle Peak area near Donner Summit Tuesday after getting caught in an overnight snowstorm.

A couple and their teen-age son were retrieved by a California Highway Patrol helicopter about two miles north of Interstate 80, along Andesite Ridge, said CHP helicopter medic Mike Crain.

“They were (cold) and hadn’t had anything to eat or drink. I don’t know if they could’ve hiked out or not,” Crain said.

Crain said he didn’t learn the family members’ names, and a crew member of the Donner Summit Fire Department, which also responded, said the names couldn’t be released.

The family snowshoed in Sunday, stayed at the Peter Grubb Hut, and planned to return Monday afternoon when a storm carrying 6 to 7 inches of snow hit.

They built a snow cave, spent the night in it, and the father called 911 from a cell phone around 11 a.m. Tuesday. They were located less than an hour later.

The father, who went by the name Michael, “sounded pretty exhausted,” said dispatcher Tony Peard of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

The helicopter crew quickly spotted the family, but the landing wasn’t easy.

“Since it snowed yesterday, it was real powdery, and they were on a ridge,” Crain said.

The CHP dropped the family at Boreal Mountain Resort, where they were expected to receive food and beverages.
