Smartville man dies after jump

Officials on Thursday identified a man who died after jumping off a high cliff into Englebright Reservoir as Chadrick Henry Roberson of Smartville.

Roberson, 29, had been fishing with family members Wednesday at Black Ravine Point, one-quarter mile from the marina, when he dove off the family’s pontoon boat and climbed up a nearby 50-foot cliff at about 11 a.m., Sheriff Keith Royal said.

He apparently misjudged the depth of the water and leapt feet-first into roughly 1 foot of water, Royal said.

At first, Roberson remained conscious at the scene while other boaters tried to stop his bleeding by applying tourniquets to his legs. Other boaters and his step-grandfather brought the semi-conscious Roberson to the Narrows boat launch, where an ambulance waited, Royal said.

Despite efforts of rescue workers, Roberson’s condition worsened, and he suffered cardiac arrest, Royal said. Rescue workers continued to give life-saving measures, but declared him dead at the scene after 30 to 40 minutes, Royal said.

“This is a very tragic situation where an individual jumped off of high areas around the lake,” Royal said.

Officials will run toxicology reports as part of their investigation, Royal said.
